Ice Storm
We’re in the midst of the ice storm that’s taking place. We’re all safe at home and still have power. While we still have power, I’ll periodically update on how we’re doing.
The rain started falling in the late afternoon yesterday. I left work early and caravanned up I-540 with a coworker. We took it slow and made it home safely. When I got out of my car, the bumpers and side mirrors were caked with ice already. We had just made a grocery run the day before and I picked up some starter logs for our fireplace, so we should have everything we need.
Overnight, more freezing rain fell and caked all the branches of the trees in our backyard so that they were all hanging down. We moved our dog into the garage so that she wouldn’t be out in the freezing rain. And we’re trying to get a fire going. We didn’t think about moving a supply of firewood into the garage to dry out, so the firewood was covered in ice. Getting the fire going has been a bit of a challenge.
I had anticipated that I’d be iced in at home today, so I brought some work home with me. And while I was working (still in my pj’s – woot!) I heard what sounded like a crack of thunder! But it was a large section of a tree that had snapped and fallen. The smaller tips of the branches hit the corner of our roof and slid off. Hopefully, it wasn’t enough to do any damage.
So far, we’re doing fine. I figure we’ll eventually lose power because the rain is getting heavier, and when it falls it turns into ice. That means more fallen branches and/or trees, and more damaged powerlines.
Update #1 – 1:30pm: Power is flickering a lot now, and branches are falling all over the place. Prayers, please!
